The majority leader of Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adeyinka Mafe, has empowered no fewer than 700 members of his constituency in Sagamu. He also declared his interest in running for Remo Federal House of Representatives in Abuja come 2019.

He also fixed 250 unemployed graduates in companies in his constituency for internship programme for six months.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony held at the Akarigbo Palace in Sagamu area of the state, the lawmaker who represents Sagamu I State Constituency at the Ogun State House of Assembly said the beneficiaries of the empowerment programme have been trained in different vocations.

The lawmaker also used the opportunity to declare his intention to contest for House of Representatives slot in Remo Federal Constituency of the state.

According to the facilitators of the programme, the beneficiaries were trained in ICT,  make-up, hair dressing, barbing, soap making, photography, catering, bead making,  amongst others.

Mafe said the aim of the training was to take unemployed youths off the street by fixing them in vocation of choice which he said culminated in the graduation.

Outstanding students of the vocational training were supported with start-up kits while others were given certificate of operation to start their own businesses.

According to him, not only would the gesture help the trainees secure employment, they will also become employers of labour.

On the internship programme, Mafe said the initiative was born out of the need to provide the graduates with requisite experience needed by employers in the labour market.

According to him, in conjunction with the State Ministry of Commerce and Industry, all the 54 companies in the constituency, including multinationals, have committed in writing to accommodate the unemployed graduates.

He said, “We have so many graduates that are unemployed, we sat down as taught about it and we came home with the Internship programme which will accommodate 250 graduates in companies and by the time they spent 6 months, I am sure 70% of them would be retained.

“If we do that next year, you can imagine the number of unemployed graduates that would have been fixed. This programme is a laudable one and I encourage every other lawmaker to do same in their constituencies.”

On his ambition, he said, “I am happy that my people have called me to represent them at the federal level and I am ready to give them what’s different from what they have now.

“I promised to be a good representative at the green chamber through vibrant representation that I have been doing since 1998 when I was voted as a Councillor in Sagamu local government.”
