Less than four days to the governorship election in Ogun State, anxieties, fears and realignments have pervaded the political space of the State with relentless strategies by the three dominant political parties APC, PDP and ADC on procuring supports from various groups and individuals. The last one week has indeed witnessed a lot endorsements real and procured for the three major contenders Dapo Abiodun, the incumbent governor, Ladi Adebutu, a perennial contestant and a major contender Biyi Otegbeye.
Of all these three gladiators, Abiodun and Adebutu are brothers from Iperu-Remo, Ikene LGA in Remo land of Ogun East. A district that has produced the governor for 16 years and its attempting to increase to 20 years peradventure any of the two Iperu sons wins the election on Saturday 18th March 2023.
Barr. Biyi Otegbeye, BOT of ADC is in this contest as the only candidate from Ogun West. A district which is claiming marginalization because it has not tasted the seat of power since the creation of Ogun State 47years. The district appears to be ready for the battle this time around arising from the popularity of the Ogun West Agenda among the Yewa-Awori-Ogu-Anango people
Three strong personalities in Ogun State may influence the direction of the Ogun governorship 2023. These personalities are located in each of the three districts of Ogun State: West, Central and East. These personalities are Amosun of Ogun Central, Daniel of Ogun East and Gboyega Isiaka of Ogun West. Amosun influence is statewide with a cult-like followership; Gbenga Daniel also enjoys a lot of goodwill across the State. Isiaka is well respected in Ogun West having contested the governorship seat three times.
Senator Ibikunle Amosun who is an archnemesis of Dapo Abiodun has never hidden his interest for the replacement of Dapo Abiodun with a scion from Ogun West. In fact he has traversed all the local government areas of Ogun State campaigning for his governorship choice, a boardroom and Insurance guru Barr. Biyi Otegbeye of African Democratic Congress, ADC. Amosun hinged his support for Otegbeye on two strong premise: the need for equity and fairness to allow Ogun West feel been part of Ogun State and the fact that Biyi Otegbeye represents the best to lift Ogun State out of the present dungeons it has found itself due to the maladministration and glaring incompetence of the present government. Amosun has informed and indeed instructed thousands of his loyalists to campaign and vote for Biyi Otegbeye of ADC. The support for Otegbye has been massive and is already making greater impact for the candidate of ADC.
Gbenga Daniel from Ogun State is seen not on same page with his brother governor from Remo land, Dapo Abiodun. Abiodun had almost prevented Daniel from becoming the Senatorial candidate for Ogun East in the 2023 election. Abiodun actually supported and preferred Lekan Mustapha from Ijebu-Igbo. Credible source revealed that it was HRM Awujale of Ijebu land that ‘snatched’ the ticket from APC for Gbenga Daniel. Since that time, the relationship between Daniel and Abiodun had become strained.
According to several credible sources from the closest aides to Gbenga Daniel, the former governor has instructed his loyalists to look into the direction of Ogun West in the coming governorship election in Ogun State and that they should actually vote for the only governorship candidate from the district. The highly respected former governor premised his instruction on the need to uphold one’s integrity and the virtues of “Omoluabi”. Daniel has told his supporters “I believe my people in Ogun West have been unfairly treated in Ogun project and that is why I supported their son Gboyega Nasir Isiaka twice for the governorship contest in Ogun State and I cannot this time around says the district is not eminently qualified again to be given the governorship slot. If I now stand against or work against Ogun West governorship aspiration in 2023, I will be seen as a man without characters and integrity, unreliable and undependable. My soul and spirits go with the governorship aspiration of Ogun West people”. Daniel supporters already know the direction where their principal is going and according to Mallam Sanni from Sagamu “we need to be sincere with ourselves and fair to Yewa-Awori. Our principal has told us to prepare our votes for Ogun West in the 18th March 2023 governorship election in Ogun State and that is the final instruction”
The final and indeed an important political figure to probably determine the altitude and latitude of the governorship election is Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, GNI who was recently elected the House of Representatives member from Imeko-Afon/Yewa North Federal Constituency. GNI is a colossus in that axis of the state. He has contested the governorship of Ogun State three times and the last time in 2019 was under African Democratic Congress, ADC. According to close associates of GNI the HOR elect has told his loyalists that he can’t go against his conscience to tell his Ogun West people to vote for any governorship candidate other than the only one from the district, Biyi Otegbeye. According to an associate of GNI Toyin Sanusi “GNI said he contested from Yewa-Awori land three times because he believed the district has been marginalized and now that we have a sure chance of realizing our age long aspiration I should not be seen to truncate it otherwise the ancestors and humanity will not forgive me”. Sanusi further said “Oga has told us to cast our votes for Ogun West in the governorship election and we will do just that”
Indeed the 2023 governorship election in Ogun State promises to be the most interesting and intriguing ever. Amosun, Daniel and Isiaka are the powerhouses in this election, underrate them at your own perils. Ogun governorship election is a battle of the god fathers more powerful than the power of incumbency. It appears the god fathers will have their ways in this election. If they actually do, then the power may successfully shift to Ogun West in 2023
