EDUCATION: UNICAL Suspends Dean Faculty Of Law, Prof. Cyril After Students Protest Over Alleged Sexual harassment

The Management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended the Dean, Faculty of Law, Prof. Cyril Ndifon, over alleged violation of the provisions of the extant laws and policies of the institution.

His suspension came a few days after some law students accused him  of alleged sexual harassment in a protest within the school’s premises.

It was gathered that no student had come forward with fresh claims against him but a few called him out over past cases for which he was earlier suspended in 2015 followed by a court case before his reinstatement.

The latest suspension conveyed in a letter signed by the university’s Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, took effect yesterday, August 17.

According to the letter, the suspension came on the heels of the Dean’s response to a query earlier issued to him by the University Management which the Vice Chancellor was dissatisfied with.

Consequently, Prof. Ndifon was relieved of his position as Dean and placed under suspension with the matter referred to a panel that would be constituted to probe the allegations against him.

The letter read: “Please refer to our letter Ref UC/REG/DISC.45A dated August 14, 2023 on your alleged violation of the provisions of the extant laws and policies of the University and your response to the said letter which was dated 16th August, 2023.

including all official responsibilities presently handled by you to the Sub-Dean of the Faculty before vacating the office.

“You are to stay away from the University premises except while responding to invitations from the panel investigating these allegations.”
