Sagamu/Abeokuta Express Road: 18 Years Of Continuous Work Without The Desired Result
July 4, 2021.
8 years reign of Otunba Justus Olugbenga Daniel (OGD) as the Executive Governor of Ogun State, we witnessed the dualization of this Shagamu/Abeokuta Express road.
Another 8 years reign of Sen. Ibikunle Amosun (SIA) also as the State Governor, was for the expansion of the same Express Road with the median interlocked and landscaped with concrete paving stones and expensive shrubs, and functional streetlights. Oh, what a beautiful look this road beams especially at night.
Now 2 years into the adminstration of HE Prince Dapo Abiodun (PDA), and it is still work in progress on this same road!
From median expansion, removal of the streetlights, shrubs, and the concrete paving stones on the median to concreting of same, to asphalt laying on the road, and more. Then it leaves me wondering...
1. Does it take this long to put up a standard(or "world class") road?
2. Are the contractors handling this road the ones to be faulted?
3. Why is it that the focus of these three transitions is on this road?
4. Can't they just get this road fixed and more durable to stand the test of time once and for all for the sake of the good hardworking and tax paying people of the state who need a respite?
As an indigene of Ogun State that was well brought up in Lagos before finally settling down in Ogun, I'm a product of the "Jakande school" in Lagos, and a beneficiary of several other age long infrastructures put up by several of our past leaders both in Ogun and Lagos States. Before anyone pins the reason for this never ending work on the road to maintenance, just hear me out.
Yes, the talk and importance of maintenance is well understood on and for all of our existing social ammenities, but when a particular road, project or amenity keeps calling for maintenance time and time again, then your guess is as good as mine. The purse of the state is maliciously leaking.
For such road as this that has been experiencing time to time expansion, renovation, and face-lifting since as far back as the days of OGD I think the present administration based on our present economic reality should consider a lasting solution to curb this "waste of our little IGR" all in the name of maintenance when there are several other social needs to be met all around the state. May I therefore use this medium to call on all concerned to give this issue the desired and sincere consideration!!!
