SAVE SAGAMU PRESS CONFERENCE/ PEACEFUL PROTEST
(Being the text of a press conference organized by the Concerned Sagamu Stakeholders)
Greatest Sagamu Youth!
Let me specially welcome you all to this press conference and peaceful protest organized by the Concerned Sagamu Stakeholders, to address some disturbing issues that are affecting the economic and social development in our community. It is imperative at this point to state the 3 major reasons for this press conference and protest.
1- Protest against IBEDC extortion
2- Protest against Cult killings in Sagamu
3- Protest against High rate of Unemployment and economic exploitations.
Distinguished comrades and great youth of Sagamu, you will all agree that the above mentioned protest is long overdue, as it has become a daily menace that has become a cankerworm eating deep the root of development and progress in our dear Sagamu. Therefore, it is highly important that all stakeholders in Sagamu must rise up to form a coalition against these menace. Failure to do so, may possibly lead us to a stage and state of emergency in our town. May this never happen to us.
Having stated the reasons why we are all gathered here today, Let me on behalf of all the Concerned Sagamu Stakeholders outline our position and resolutions respectively;
1- IBEDC EXTORTION
Since the inception of IBEDC, it is a well known fact that the electricity distribution company has not been customer friendly, most especially here in Sagamu, there are cases of many communities in Sagamu not having light for weeks and months, yet electricity bills kept flying to this places. You will again agree with us that IBEDC is making us pay for electricity we don't consume. Even in most cases, the transformers, cables and other materials being used by IBEDC are provided by the people but only for them to claim ownership of our collective efforts and sweats.
Greatest Sagamites, permit me not to bother you with many stories that touches on the disgusting activities of IBEDC in Sagamu, as we (rich and poor) are all victims of their inhumane actions.
Therefore and at this ALUTALISTIC juncture, we, the Concerned Stakeholders and on behalf of the good people of Sagamu, hereby resolve and demand for the following;
*We are mandating IBEDC to stop the unlawful imposition of outrageous estimated billing system on the electricity consumers in Sagamu and her environ
* IBEDC must ensure and begin a process of supply of free prepaid meters to all electricity consumers in Sagamu.
* Cancellation of all questionable accumulated debts based on estimated billings prior to the mandated installation of prepaid metres.
* We say Enough is Enough to IBEDC exploitations and extortions on the good people of Sagamu.
* We are using this medium to send a very strong warning to IBEDC management not to attempt to disregard any of our demands.
NO LIGHT NO BILL
2- SAY NO TO CULT KILLINGS IN SAGAMU.
Without any fear or favor, it is disheartening and very disgusting to say that Sagamu has become a centre field for cult related activities and killings. Many stakeholders and community leaders have come up with different ideas, scopes and way forward to end this menace but it's very unfortunate to state that all efforts on the sensitization, peace and reconciliation processes have proven abortive and seems as if there is no solution to this menace.
The rise in cult killings in Sagamu have come to a peak of communal shame for Sagamu at the comity of towns and cities in Nigeria. Therefore ,at this meditational and conscious point, there is absolute and compulsory need for every Sagamu sons, daughters and residents to as a matter of must, rise up and raise their voice against every act of cult killing in Sagamu and not minding whose ox is gored! Enough is Enough
Let us all be reminded that SAGAMU is a great town blessed with many economic, business and social potentials, but not many of us knows that the recent cult killings are enough to disturb, destroy and disrupt the great potential status of Sagamu Town. These are the more reasons why Government at all levels, Security Agencies, our Obas, Baales, community Leaders, Youth Leaders and other stakeholders must come together and join forces to battle cult killings and ensure a compulsory peace reconciliation between all the warring groups as it has become necessary. Once again, enough is enough!
We should also seize this medium to outline the consequences and negative effects of cultism or cult related activities ;
*Untimely death *Loss of moral and social values, * Jail Sentence *Incomplete Education, *Drug Addiction, *Un-realize-able life ambitions, *Mental Illness *Spiritual problem and *Possible loss of family members.
3- SAY NO TO HIGH RATE OF UNEMPLOYMENT IN SAGAMU
An undisputed fact is that majority of our Youths in Sagamu are unemployed despite that we are surrounded by many companies and industries in Sagamu and her environ.
Our own Sagamu town is blessed with great natural resources, she's a land full of milk and honey but many companies in Sagamu have now imposed a wrong culture on our land where they keep recruiting non Indigenes despite having qualified, learned and professional Sagamites who are well educated, read and versatile in their various areas of professionalism and fields.
it has come to our notice that our teeming youths are not beneficiaries of employment in companies that are domicile in our town, this is totally uncalled for, if we should go round this companies, we would confirm vividly that the hierarchy of organizations were dominated by People that are not residents or indigenes of Sagamu not to talk of Ogun state, they have failed to reckon with our youths that are well educated & qualified to work, it is highly disappointing that these companies are failing in the aspect of their corporate Social responsibility which is the responsibility of Companies to their communities,
Undoubtedly, we are sending a strong warning to all the existing companies in Sagamu to revisit the Nigerian Labour Law and act accordingly and appropriately to avert shutting down.
Without minding whose ox is gored, we shall be visiting companies in days time as such, want to know how many Sagamites are being gainfully employed in those industries because you all can't built your companies on our land and refused to employ our people.
It's so shameful that due to our proximity to Lagos, our great and prudent Youths keep traveling to Lagos and other neighboring states in search for greener pastures while we have industries in our domain.
Upon our visitation to companies, the questions to be asked are as follow;
- How many Sagamites are gainfully employed by your company?
- What's the total number of Sagamites employed directly or indirectly?
- How many Sagamu Indigenes are senior staffs?
- How many Sagamites are occupying managerial positions in your reputable organization?
- What's the quota given to Sagamu as a host Community in accordance with the Nigerian Labour Law and local content policy?
- Who are the Community Liaison officers (CLO) representing our community interest?
Above all, it's high time we right the wrongs as the high rate of unemployment has really contributed to the violence, unrest, proliferation of cultism, drug abuse and other social vices in our town.
On a final note ,greatest Sagamites, it is our hope and strong believe that our demands and resolutions will be quickly addressed and resolved by concerned authorities, as we shall always be ready anytime and anyday to fight and protect the interest and agitations of the good people of Sagamu.
Finally, we say Enough is Enough.....O TO GE.
Greatest Sagamu People......Great!!!
Sagamu o ni baje ooo!!
